How to buy the best postpaid connection for a temporary time
Are you in the country for just a short stay? Here’s how you get the best postpaid plan.
There are scores of people moving to India temporarily for exploration and/or travel. While they are here, they require a working phone connection so they can communicate back home and within the country, carry out their daily tasks, and even document their stay.
Most visitors take a prepaid phone connection – they reason that they’re in the country for a short while, so why take a postpaid plan? But if you are here for a while, and have a definite time frame for your stay (say, longer than a year) then you can consider buying a postpaid SIM.
Here’s how you can get one:
* Assess your needs. Whether you buy a postpaid SIM or not depends on what you’re looking for in the phone connection. If you don’t use your phone all day, or don’t have an intensive need for a lot of data, then you are better off with a prepaid plan. Also, if you are an expat or NRI without a permanent address in India, then you might not be able to buy a postpaid connection. Or you may get a postpaid connection as part of your company’s corporate plan. The point is, go for a postpaid SIM only if you really need one during your stay.
* Consider your options. If you decide to go ahead with buying the postpaid SIM, you will need to go through several plans across leading service providers to find the most suitable one. We suggest going with an operator that has a dominating presence in the city as regards a high penetration of cell towers, resulting in always-on connectivity. Also look for the fastest data speeds, reasonably priced plans and high amounts of monthly data (ranging from 40 GB to 100 GB per month) with data rollover facility.
* Buy the postpaid SIM. Once you select the most suitable postpaid plan, it is time to buy the postpaid SIM. You can initiate the purchase online from a leading service provider. After this, the provider will send the postpaid SIM to your address and send a staff member to complete the KYC process. As part of the KYC, you must submit two photographs, a completed application form, and personal ID and address proof. Once the KYC is done, the SIM is activated and you can insert it in your phone and start using it.
* Disconnect the connection when you leave. Since you are in India for a limited time, there will soon come the day when you must leave for another country. Be sure to initiate disconnection of the postpaidSIM before you leave. Keeping the connection active is not advisable, and you will incur charges for the same till you disconnect it.
