What are the Ambien Side Effects and How to Deal with Them
Ambien is a prescription sleep aid that is popular in the United States. For the most part people do claim that it helps them fall asleep faster and stay asleep, but like anything Ambien has some side effects that you really need to be aware about. You may have heard people laugh or joke about the commercials for Ambien where by law they have to list the common or dangerous side effects to the drug. Unfortunately, the Ambien side effects are no laughing matter if you are experiencing them.
One of Ambien’s most common side effects is addiction. It is an extremely easy drug to become addicted to especially if you are not taking it as prescribed. Some of the key signs of an addiction to Ambien are:
- Inability to fall asleep without the drug
- Obsession or craving for Ambien
- Using Ambien for its euphoric effect when you do not need it
- Using Ambien to get to sleep when you do not need it
- Increasing the amount that you are using beyond your prescription
- Taking Ambien without a prescription regularly
Although these are not the only signs of addiction, they are the most prominent ones. Each person reacts to Ambien differently and will show addiction in a slightly different manner. If you feel that you are addicted to Ambien, you do have treatment options. There are both inpatient and outpatient facilities that can help you deal with your addiction.
Other Dangerous Ambien Side Effects
You may have heard about the other dangerous side effects to Ambien. Ambien side effects are said to be uncommon but enough people report experiencing them that they are highlighted on Ambien advertisements. One of the most dangerous is the fact that many people find themselves doing things while they are on the drug without ever realizing or remembering what they are doing. This includes:
- Sleep walking
- Sleep talking
- Sleep driving
- Sleep sexual relations
- Entire conversations while you are still in a sleep like state
- Performing other activities while unaware
One of the key problems with this drug is that you might perform any number of actions while on it with little or no memory of doing so. The chance of this happening increases with the amount of Ambien you are taking and if you are taking Ambien with alcohol or another drug.
Unfortunately, it may be too late by the time you experience these particular side effects. You could very easily get into an accident, attack a family member, or find yourself incarcerated before you realize that it is a side effect of the drug.
The only way to stop this from happening once it starts is stop using Ambien. Your doctor may be able to recommend another sleep aid if you are still having issues and encounter one of the dangerous side effects. If you are addicted to Ambien and cannot simply quit, seek help as soon as possible. The longer you take Ambien the more likely you are to experience these dangerous side effects.
